Okinawa Prefecture is made up of the Ryukyu Islands, which at their southern extremity begin at Nansei Island, and lie between Kyushu, the most southwesterly of Japan's four main islands, and Taiwan. Okinawa consists of 160 islands of various size scattered across a vast area of ocean. The temperature in winter is about the same as that of springtime in Tokyo and Osaka, making it warm and comfortable throughout the year.
The crystal blue sea, with white sand beaches and colorful fish dancing through coral, attracts vacationers as a holiday resort area with many diving spots. Yae-yama Islands, an archipelago lying 450 kilometers to the southwest of Okinawa Main Island, consist of Ishigakij-jima, Iriomote-jima, Taketomi-jima, Kohama-jima, Kuro-shima, Hateruma-jima, Yonaguni-jima and several other islands. Ishigaki-jima Island is the main island in the Yae-yama archipelago, which is about 420 kilometers southwest of Naha on Okinawa Main Island. Ishigaki-jima Island is 90 kilometers around, and covered with mountains, including Mt. Omoto-dake, rising 526 meters above sea level, the highest in Okinawa. The coral reef sea there is famous throughout the world and there are many scenic marine spots on the island, such as Shiraho, noted for a variety of colored coral that can be seen covering the bottom below the transparent waters, and Kabira Bay where the ocean's blueness is said to be the brightest in Okinawa.
Yonaguni-jima Island is the easternmost place in Japan. It is 117 kilometers from Ishigaki-jima Island, and just 111 kilometers away from Taiwan. It lies on the border between Japan and Taiwan, which can be seen in the distance several times a year. Also, 100 meters off the southern coast of the island is what appears to be an undersea ruin, which is quite popular among divers. Some controversy has been raised as to whether it is a man-made or natural structure.
